About Us
Our Mission
As a cooperative gallery, our mission and purpose is to inspire and encourage the development of artistic skills inherent within our community. We benefit our artists and community by providing a gallery for display and sale of our members’ works, as well as sponsoring events that recognize our artists’ talents. Each member’s creative works add to the beauty and diversity of art in our gallery as a whole and contributes to Mariposa as a center for the purchase of beautiful local art.
We are proud to sponsor two successful art shows every year, the Elizabeth Specht Memorial Miniature Show in March. And the Sierra Artists Annual Open Exhibition in September . Both of these shows are open to artists from our extended Sierra Foothills community. The miniature show accepts entries from all over the world while the Annual Exhibition invites members of our region to display and sell their art. Both shows are juried for awards and artistic recognition.
We also participate regularly in community events in our town, such as providing a space for children to play with color and develop their own artistic expression at local fairs.
Our History
Sierra Artists Gallery was established in 1969 and is the oldest continuously operating art gallery in Mariposa, California. It was started by a group who had the vision of a community supported gallery through artistic endeavors and has become a fixture in downtown Mariposa. We’ve had talented and successful artists like Earl Rogers, Joan Crosby, Larry Potter, Lori Setterberg and Diane Hunter, to name a few, who have directed and improved our efforts to serve the arts and the artists in our community.
In 2019 we celebrated our 50th anniversary with art donations from our members for a community raffle. The poster was created with old newspaper clippings of show announcements and featured artists in the local Gazette newspaper.
Special Exhibit
Currently, we have a special display for the late work of a long-time member who passed away a few years ago: Joan Crosby. She was a member of our gallery for 30 years and sold many of her beautiful paintings of the Sierra Foothills through the gallery.
